Ronald Arthur Jones was a consultant physician at East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital. He was brought up in Chester and was educated at St Bees School, Cumbria. He went on to Queens’ College, Cambridge, and the London Hospital, where he was registrar to the cardiologist William Evans [Munk’s Roll, Vol.VIII, p.146]. He kept in touch with Evans and used to visit him in retirement in Wales.

Jones was appointed consultant physician at Ipswich in 1936 at an astonishingly early age. In this situation his work was that of a general physician but he gradually developed specialized interests in cardiology and diabetes. The work was honorary and for some years he lectured in physiology at Cambridge, where he was also an examiner. During the war Ipswich was in the ‘front line’ as a strategic East Coast dock and the workload became very heavy.

He was awarded the degree of MD in 1942. He was active on both local and regional committees.

Apart from his medical work he had many interests. He was a talented musician with a particular interest in the piano and organ and he was a keen member of the Suffolk Organists. He greatly enjoyed both the social and competitive aspects of golf. He maintained a strong interest in the countryside and farmed actively from the early 1950s until the time of his death.
