This biography is part of a series of historical obituaries, originally published in print. As products of their time periods, some biographies contain language which is inappropriate and offensive and present biased accounts of physicians’ lives and work that do not disclose unethical and discriminatory behaviour. Below is the biography as originally published in 1878.

Richard Andrews, MD, was educated at Merchant Taylors’ school, and in 1591 was elected probationary fellow of St John’s college, Oxford, where he proceeded MB 1st June, 1607, MD 1st June, 1608. He was admitted a Candidate of the College of Physicians, 3rd November, 1609, and a Fellow, 2nd April, 1610. Dr Andrews was Censor in 1613, 1617, 1619, 1621, 1629, and died, as we learn from Hamey, 25th July 1634. He was named physician to St Bartholomew’s hospital, 25th April, 1631, but his appointment was to take effect only on the death or resignation of Dr Harvey.

“Curia tent’ Lune xxv^to die April anno D’ni 1631, &c., &c.
Dr Andrewes - It is granted that Richard Andrewes, D^r in Physick, shall have the reversion, next avoidance and place of phisic’on to this hospitall, after the death, resignac’on, or other departure of D^r Harvey, now phisic’on to this hospitall, late sworne phisic’on in ordinary to his Ma^ts Howsehold, w^th the yerly stipend thereunto nowe belonginge.”(1)

Dr Andrews did not live to succeed Harvey in this office. He died on the 25th July, 1634. “He had improved himself much,” says Wood, “in his faculty during his travels beyond the seas,” which afterwards made him highly esteemed among learned men and others.(2)
