This biography is part of a series of historical obituaries, originally published in print. As products of their time periods, some biographies contain language which is inappropriate and offensive and present biased accounts of physicians’ lives and work that do not disclose unethical and discriminatory behaviour. As an establishment organisation, the RCP, its members, and the way they are written about, have often reflected societal power structures that favour dominant groups. We aim to redress these biases through ongoing work.

Below is the biography as originally published between 2005 and 2018.

Gabriel Stephen Nagy was a consultant physician in Sydney, Australia. He was born in Budapest, the son of William Nagy, a lawyer, and Mary Gizella Zerkowitz, the daughter of a journalist. He was educated at Racz School and Berzsenyi High School in Budapest.

He studied medicine at Sydney University, Australia, graduating in 1946. He was a resident medical officer at Sydney Hospital from 1946 to 1947. In 1951 he was in London, working as a house physician at the Central Middlesex Hospital.

He returned to Sydney, where he held honorary posts as a general physician and gastroenterologist at North Shore Hospital, St Luke’s and Mona Vale District Hospital. In 1990 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sydney University for his contribution to medicine, particularly gastroenterology.

He wrote papers on gastroenterological topics, including gastric biopsy and endoscopy.

In 1949 he married Joanne Atkinson, the daughter of an insurance agent. They had two sons and two daughters.
